Many decades ago I had a boss who was a stickler for everyone being in the office at 9am. We had a receptionist that frequently breezed in 15 or 20 minutes late. She was the personification of blond jokes, and was often tricked into paging fictitious characters like "Jim Shoes". If the Simpsons had been on then, we'd have used every one of Bart's pranks. One morning the boss happened to be at her desk when she came in, arms crossed, stern frown. He said "You should have been here at 9 o'clock!" With wide eyes, she breathlessly asked "Why? What happened?"
Fuck. I’ve had this happen to me more than once. Not for taking long lunches, but for leaving ‘on time’ every day, even though I showed up an hour early every day so I could get stuff done before everyone else showed up.
In my experience, if you work 8h days, you should take at least a 30 minute break at lunch, and a 15m break in the morning and a 15m break in the afternoon. Anything less is destructive to productivity and health in the long run.
All I can say about a 10h work-day is... don't. That's detrimental in the long run no matter how long of a break you take. Maybe okay to do occasionally, but you are literally destroying your body.
They also don't notice that sometimes we take a 15 minute lunch break.
The lunch break can run a little longer if you’re caught up in a work‑related conversation with a colleague.
