My first task as a new programmer at a company was to sit and read product manuals for a month. I did nothing else. I had no computer to work with, no office space, nobody at all near me. They thought of it as getting me acclimated, but I didn't need any of the information in the manuals when I finally started working.
On the plus side, anyone who walked by the room I was in wondered what I was there for and the mystery of it drove some of them crazy.
