I once had a contract at a defence contractor where I was asked to work nights and weekends.
Unfortunately, I needed to work with classified equipment, and my security clearances hadn't come through yet. Until I got them, I couldn't enter the secure area, or even the building, without an escort. I could only work on it when there was someone with a clearance "supervising" me.
In reality, someone would swipe me into the secure area and go back to their desk, which might be on another floor. On record, they were "supervising" me in the sense that if I messed up, blew up a lab, or sold state secrets to Russia, they were responsible for it, but since DND had verbally approved my clearance, and it was just waiting for the paperwork, nobody was worried.
Unfortunately, they had a customer demo pending and weren't anywhere near ready. That was why I'd been hired in a rush.
My boss asked me to work late and weekends. Since I young, starting out, and on contract making $$$ per hour, I wasn't averse to the idea. And I did burn the midnight oil during weekdays. Weekends presented a problem, since I didn't have my clearances, I worked in a building where security was "shoot first, interrogate the body later" (the building a mile away from the one I worked in had been bombed by terrorists), and nobody was working on the weekends, so I couldn't see how I could. Was the company going to expedite my clearances?
My boss looked at me and said "you are strongly encouraged to bypass security and work on the weekend".
Strongly encouraged. Right. Were they whitelisting me with security? No, I would be on my own.
Visions of Mission:Impossible's "should you be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions" went through my head.
Unlike Rollin Hand, I did *not* accept the assignment, and stuck to working only weekdays.
