My last employer was very bad about this sort of stuff. We would get a nondescript email in the morning from HR that said we had to read and acknowledge a memo by 5:00 PM or be fired.
LOL, my classic response to such situations is: 'Which genius was sitting on this for weeks before forwarding it?' (replace genius with a more suitable word to your taste, mine is quite bad)"
Unfortunately, this is all too familiar to me. I always think, "A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine." And then act accordingly, as much as the situation allows.
